If your Instagram Story will not post, the likely causes are your connection, an out-of-date app, or a file the app struggles to upload. An account limit is a less likely possibility, and we found no Instagram page that links it to Stories. Work through the nine fixes below in order, because the early ones take seconds. Start by working out which kind of failure you have, since the stage where it stops points at the cause.
First, find out where it stops
The same complaint covers four different failures. Match yours to the right starting point.
- Spins on a sharing or uploading indicator, or stays at the first part of the progress bar: rule out the connection first. Start with fixes 1 and 2.
- Gets part of the way, then stops: check the file size and the connection. Fixes 2, 5 and 6.
- Fails straight away with an error message: check the app version, the cache and the account. Fixes 3, 4, 6 and 7.
- Posts to some people but you cannot see it, or the ring never appears: this may not be a posting failure at all. Wait a minute and refresh your profile before changing anything.
Instagram's Help Center has its own Troubleshooting page for issues like this and a page for reporting a technical problem; fix 9 points to that if nothing works.
1. Check whether Instagram itself is having a problem
Before you touch your phone, check whether other apps load normally and whether others are reporting the same thing. If Instagram is having trouble, your fix is to wait. Retrying a failed Story over and over cannot fix a problem on Instagram's side.
2. Switch your connection
Turn Wi-Fi off and use mobile data, or the other way around. Instagram's Troubleshooting page suggests trying both to see whether a weak Wi-Fi or mobile data connection is the problem. If one works, the other was the problem. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or restart it. Turn off any VPN while you post, because a VPN can slow or interrupt uploads.
iPhone: Settings, then Wi-Fi or Cellular, and confirm Instagram has cellular access under Settings, Cellular, Instagram. Android: Settings, Network and internet (the name varies by phone maker), check that mobile data is on and that no data saver is restricting Instagram.
3. Update Instagram and your phone
Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to always make sure you are running the latest version of the Instagram app and of your phone or tablet's operating system before trying its other steps.
iPhone: open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and update Instagram. Check Settings, General, Software Update. Android: open Google Play, search Instagram, tap Update. Check your phone's software update screen (usually under Settings, System or Software update; the path varies by maker).
4. Restart the app and the phone
Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to always try restarting your phone or tablet first. Close Instagram fully, not just minimise it, then reopen it. If the Story still fails, restart the whole phone, which can clear a stuck background task.
5. Check the file: size, length and format
A Story made from a very large or long video, or from a file edited in another app, may fail where a simpler file posts fine. Try this sequence.
- Post a plain photo to your Story. If it works, the connection and account are fine and the problem is the video file.
- For video, shorten it and export it at a standard resolution in a common format such as MP4, filmed or edited vertically.
- If the Story is from your camera roll, try recording it directly in the Instagram camera instead.
- Make sure you have free storage on the phone. A nearly full phone struggles to process and upload video.
Instagram's own pages on uploading and editing Stories cover the creative tools; our guide on scheduling problems and fixes covers file and format problems when you use a scheduler.
6. Clear the app's cache
Stored temporary data can hold a broken upload.
Android: Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage (or Storage & cache), Clear cache. (Do not choose Clear data unless you want to log in again.) iPhone: iOS has no cache button, and Offload App keeps the app's data. To clear it, delete and reinstall Instagram (fix 9).
7. Rule out an account limit
We found no Instagram Help Center page that lists an account limit as a cause of Story upload failures. But if other things also fail (likes, follows, comments, messages) and you see a message about limited activity, your account may be temporarily limited. Accounts report this after bursts of repeated actions in a short time, and we found no Instagram page that gives thresholds. If you see such a message, stop all repeated actions and wait instead of retrying. Our guide to what to do when Instagram restricts certain activity covers the wording and recovery.
Also check that no third-party app has your login. Remove any you do not recognise.
8. Log out and back in
Log out of Instagram, restart the app, and log back in. This refreshes your session. Make sure you know your password and have access to your email or phone number for confirmation first.
9. Reinstall the app, then report it
If nothing has worked, delete the app and install it again. Instagram's Troubleshooting page says, in its iPhone and iPad steps, that your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram when you remove the app; save the photos and videos you were trying to post to your camera roll first.
If it still fails after a clean install, use Instagram's built-in report-a-problem option: tap your profile, then Menu, then Help, then Report a Problem. Instagram's page says details such as the kind of phone, what you were doing and a screenshot may help it address the issue.
What to do while the fix is pending
- Save the Story to your camera roll so the work is not lost.
- Post it as a regular feed post or Reel if the timing matters and that works.
- Do not hammer retry. Wait a few minutes between attempts.
Stories work best as a steady habit, which is easier when the posting side is not a daily fight. If you want help growing the audience that watches them, UpGrow's Instagram growth service handles audience targeting without needing your Instagram password.
FAQ
Why is my Instagram Story stuck on sharing or uploading?
A Story stuck at that stage has not finished uploading. A weak connection and a heavy video are the first things to rule out: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, shorten the video, and restart the app before trying anything else.
Why does my Story post for me but nobody sees it?
Refresh your profile first. If the Story ring is there for you but others say they cannot see it, check that you did not share it to Close Friends only, and give it a minute.
Will reinstalling Instagram delete my account or posts?
No. Reinstalling does not delete your account. Instagram's Troubleshooting page says, in its iPhone and iPad steps, that your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram when you remove the app, and you log back in after reinstalling. Save any photos or videos you had not posted to your camera roll first.
How long should I wait before I try posting a Story again?
Wait a few minutes between attempts, longer if you saw a message about limited activity. We found no Instagram page that sets a limit for retries, so avoid rapid repeats.
Can too many Stories at once cause the problem?
We found no Instagram page that says whether posting many Stories in quick succession causes failures, or gives a number. Post in smaller sets and let each finish first.
