Key Instagram growth statistics
Most Instagram accounts are small, and the first month decides a lot. These are the headline figures from UpGrow's own records; each one links to its method below.
- 78.9% of 1,064,485 Instagram accounts have fewer than 1,000 followers; the median account has 214.
- 96.5% have fewer than 10,000 followers. Only 0.49% reach 100,000.
- New accounts are getting smaller: the median account added in 2026 had 173 followers, against 311 in 2024.
- 93.9% of accounts growing with UpGrow gained followers in their first 30 days, a median of +457.
- Accounts under 1,000 followers grew a median 412.3% in 30 days (from 114 to about 572).
- After 90 days the median gain was +1,273 followers; 44.5% of it arrived in the first 30 days.

How many followers do Instagram accounts have?
We grouped 1,064,485 unique Instagram accounts by the follower count UpGrow read when each account was added. Two in three have fewer than 500 followers, and fewer than one in 25 has passed 10,000.

Following vs followers
The median account follows 106 people and 35.1% follow more people than follow them back. That share falls fast with size: 57.5% of accounts under 100 followers follow more than they have, but none of the accounts above 10,000 do, partly because Instagram caps following at 7,500 accounts.

Accounts are starting smaller every year
The median account added to UpGrow in 2026 had 173 followers, down from 311 in 2024, and the share under 1,000 followers rose from 71.1% to 84.1%. More people are starting Instagram growth from a small or brand-new account.

Follower growth in the first 30 days
We followed 24,156 accounts that UpGrow tracked daily for at least 30 days after they connected. 93.9% gained followers, with a median net gain of 457. The gain in followers is similar at every size, so smaller accounts grow far more in percentage terms: accounts under 1,000 followers more than quadrupled.

What happens after 90 days
Of the 8,043 accounts tracked for 90 days, the median gained 1,273 followers, and 95.5% had more followers on day 90 than on day 30, so growth kept going after the first month. Growth is front-loaded: the first 30 days are a third of the period but brought 44.5% of the 90-day gain.

Methodology
All UpGrow figures were computed on October 29, 2026 from UpGrow's production database, read-only, with a cutoff of October 29, 2026 00:00 UTC. No figure is estimated, modeled or rounded beyond what is shown. We report medians, because a few very large accounts would distort averages.
- Account size (1,064,485 accounts). Every Instagram account added to UpGrow between 2023-02-09 and 2026-10-28, counted once per username (the first time it was added), using the public follower and following counts UpGrow read at that moment. Records where both counts read zero (a failed or private lookup) are excluded.
- Growth (24,156 accounts). Accounts UpGrow recorded a daily follower count for, from the first reading on, and that have a reading between day 27 and day 30. Readings of zero are dropped. Start years: 2023 (739), 2024 (16,423), 2025 (6,474), 2026 (520). These are accounts using UpGrow, so the growth figures describe growth with UpGrow, not the average Instagram account.
- 90 days (8,043 accounts). The growth accounts that also have a reading between day 85 and day 90.
- Privacy. Only aggregates are published; no account, username or customer can be identified.

7,500. Instagram's Help Center says nobody can follow more than 7,500 accounts; there is no limit on followers. In UpGrow's data, 35.1% of all accounts follow more people than follow them, but none of the accounts with 10,000+ followers do.
