When Instagram search is not working, update the app first, then clear your recent searches, then test the connection on Wi-Fi and on mobile data. If search still returns nothing, log out and back in, reinstall the app, and check that you are using the right kind of search for what you want: accounts, hashtags, audio, tags or places. If only one account or hashtag cannot be found, that is a different problem with its own causes further down.
Work out which search is failing
"Search not working" covers three different problems, and the fix depends on which one you have.
- The search bar does nothing or results never load. That points to the app or the connection. Start with fixes 1 to 5.
- Search loads, but one specific account or hashtag is missing. That points to the account or hashtag, not the app. Jump to the section on a missing account or hashtag after the six fixes.
- Search loads, but the results look odd or feel limited to your own interests. That is how Instagram ranks results, and fix 6 covers it.
A quick test settles which one you have. Search for an account you know exists and is public, such as a big brand's profile. If it appears, your search works and the account you were looking for is the issue. If it does not appear, work through the fixes in order.
Fix 1: Update the Instagram app
Instagram's Help Center says that if something is not working in the app on iPhone or Android, the recommended step is to update to the latest version. Its Troubleshooting page adds that you should also run the latest version of your phone's operating system before trying its other steps.
- iPhone: open the App Store and look for an Instagram update.
- Android: open the Google Play Store and look for an Instagram update.
Update, restart your phone (Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to always try restarting first), close Instagram fully, reopen it and try the search again.
Fix 2: Clear your recent searches
Instagram keeps a list of the hashtags, accounts, audio, tags and places you searched for. We found no Instagram page that says clearing this list fixes search, so treat it as a cheap test. The Help Center describes this path:
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
- Tap Recent searches.
- Tap Clear next to a single search, or tap Clear All in the top right and confirm.
The steps are the same on iPhone and Android. You can also reach the list from the search screen itself: tap Search at the bottom, tap the search bar, then tap See All in the top right. Instagram's page also gives a Meta Account route for some accounts (Menu, Meta Account, Your information and permissions) and says not everyone can use that route at this time.
Instagram also says clearing your search history is temporary, and searches you clear may reappear after you search for them again, so do not spend long on this step.
Fix 3: Test Wi-Fi and mobile data
Instagram's Troubleshooting page tells you to use the app both on Wi-Fi and on mobile data to see whether the problem is a weak connection. Instagram does not tie this test to search in particular, so treat it as a check rather than a diagnosis.
- Switch Wi-Fi off and use mobile data, then try a search. Then do the reverse.
- If one works and the other does not, the weak connection was the problem. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or restart it.
- Turn off any VPN while you test.
Fix 4: Log out and back in
We found no Instagram page that names logging out and back in as a search fix, so treat it as a cheap test. In the app, tap your profile picture, then Menu; the Help Center lists Log out of your account among the options there. Before you log out, make sure you know your password and can reach your email or phone number so you can log back in. If you cannot log in, Instagram has a separate page for trouble logging in.
Restart the app after logging out, log back in and search again.
Fix 5: Reinstall the app
If restarting the phone and checking the connection did not help, Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to delete and reinstall.
- iPhone: touch and hold the Instagram icon on the Home Screen, tap Remove App to delete the app, reinstall it from the App Store and log in. Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram.
- Android: open Settings, tap Apps, tap Instagram, tap Uninstall, reinstall it from the Google Play Store and log in.
Before you delete the app, publish or save anything unfinished. Instagram's page on drafts says drafts are saved on your device, are not available from another device, and are lost if you uninstall the app. If you have a Reel draft or post draft you care about, post it or save it to your camera roll first; the Reels draft page describes saving a reel draft to your camera roll from the editing screen.
Fix 6: Use the right kind of search
Instagram's Search and Explore help page says you can search with keywords to find photos and videos, hashtags, accounts, audio, tags and places. Match the method to what you want:
- To find a person or brand: type the name or username in the search bar, tap the search button on your keyboard, then tap the Accounts filter below the search bar.
- To find a hashtag or a place page: type it, or tap the hashtag or location that appears on a post. Instagram's page on place pages and hashtag search results says both routes work.
- To find audio: search the audio name and pick the audio result.
Search results are also personalised. Meta's Transparency Center page on Instagram Search says your search experience is personalised based on your activity, and that you can view results that are not personalised specifically to you, though these options may not be available to everyone. Instagram's search help page lists the filters below the search bar in the app as For you, Accounts, Audio, Tags, Places and Reels, and does not list a Not personalized filter. If your results look narrow, tap the filter that matches what you are looking for instead of staying on For you.
Instagram also puts a blue dot next to a search result when that account has shared posts you have not seen yet. A blue dot is a status marker, not an error.
We found no Instagram page that documents Reels search being removed or changed. Instagram's search help page lists Reels as one of the filters below the search bar, so if you are looking for Reels on a topic, search the topic or hashtag and tap Reels, or browse the Reels tab.
When one account or hashtag cannot be found
If search works but one account or hashtag will not appear, the app is doing its job, so look at that account or hashtag.
- The username is slightly different. Usernames can differ by a single period or underscore. Check the spelling with whoever runs the account, or find a link to their profile.
- The account was disabled. Instagram's page on disabled accounts says a disabled account is no longer visible to others once it is disabled.
- The account was deleted. The same page says there is no way to restore a deleted account.
- It may have changed its username. Ask the person for their current username or a link to their profile.
- It is not eligible to appear in search. Instagram's page on posts missing from Explore and search says not all posts or accounts are eligible to be surfaced in Explore and search results, and that it uses a variety of signals to decide, for example whether an account has recently gone against its Community Standards.
- The hashtag is not searchable. Instagram says hashtags may not be searchable if the text or the content associated with the hashtag consistently do not follow its Terms of Use or Community Standards. It reviews these hashtags periodically and may make one searchable again.
If you search for your own account from a second account and it does not appear, first confirm the username you typed. Then open Account Status: tap your profile picture, then Menu, then Account Status below More info and support. Instagram says it shows whether something you posted went against its Community Standards and may lead to restrictions, such as features you can no longer use. Instagram names only one example of the signals it uses, so be wary of any article that claims to know the full rules. Find hashtags for your own posts with UpGrow's free tool
If the reason you search hashtags is to find tags for your own posts, UpGrow's free Instagram hashtag generator does that part for you. You describe your post or Reel, pick a content category from a list, and it returns a set of hashtags to test. It does not take a username. Our guides to Instagram hashtags and to fixing problems with AI hashtag suggestions cover how many to use and what to do when suggestions look off.
If search is still broken: report it
Instagram's page on reporting a technical problem says to update the app first, and that if the problem remains you can report it. In the app, tap your profile picture, then Menu, then Help below More info and support, then Report a Problem. Instagram says details such as the kind of phone, what you were doing and a screenshot may help it address the problem. Say which search failed: accounts, hashtags, audio or places.
If you want help growing the audience that finds you, UpGrow's Instagram growth service targets people you choose and needs only your public @username, never your password.
FAQ
Why is Instagram search not showing any results?
Instagram's Troubleshooting page lists updating the app and phone, restarting, testing Wi-Fi and mobile data, and reinstalling. Start there, then try logging out and back in as a cheap test.
Why can't I find a certain person on Instagram?
Check the exact username first. If it is right, the account may have been disabled or deleted, or it may not be eligible to appear in search. Instagram's page on disabled accounts says a disabled account is no longer visible to others, and the same page says a deleted account cannot be restored.
Does clearing my search history fix Instagram search?
It tidies the list of recent searches, which is worth trying, but Instagram says the clearing is temporary and cleared searches can reappear after you search for them again. It is a cheap step, not a guaranteed fix.
Why are my search results different from someone else's?
Meta's Transparency Center says Instagram search is personalised based on your activity. It also says you can view results that are not personalised specifically to you, but that this option may not be available to everyone, and Instagram's search help page does not list a Not personalized filter. The filters it lists below the search bar are For you, Accounts, Audio, Tags, Places and Reels.
Will reinstalling Instagram delete my account?
No. Instagram's Troubleshooting page says your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram when you remove the app on iPhone. Drafts are different: they are stored on your device and are lost if you uninstall, so post or save them to your camera roll first.
