An Instagram photo downloader works from a post's link, so getting the right link is the first job. Using the photo downloader from a post link

  1. Find the post on Instagram and check the account is public. A private profile tells you so and asks you to follow it before you can see any posts.

  2. Tap the share or three-dot menu on the post and pick Copy link. On a desktop browser, open the post and copy the address at the top of the window.

  3. Paste the link into the Instagram Photo URL field. Post links follow the pattern instagram.com/p/ plus a short code.

  4. For a profile picture, paste the profile address instead, which is instagram.com/ followed by the username.

  5. Press Download Photo.

  6. Write down who posted the image and where you found it before you file it away.

How carousels differ from single-photo posts

A carousel is one post holding several photos or videos that you swipe through. All of them share a single link, so the address you copy points to the whole set, not to the slide that happened to be on screen. The dots under the post show how many slides there are and which one you are looking at.

Carousels can mix photos with video clips. If you are after one particular picture, note its position, counting from the first slide, before you leave Instagram, so you can match it up afterwards. The first slide is the cover shown on the profile grid, and it isn't always the image that matters most.

Carousels are just as useful when you post your own work. Because one link covers every slide, a carousel lets you share a set of images, a before-and-after or a step-by-step guide as a single post that people can save and come back to.

Posts no outside downloader can open

  • Posts from private accounts. Only approved followers can see them, and only inside Instagram.

  • Posts the owner deleted or archived, which no longer exist publicly.

  • Posts Instagram took down for breaking its rules, which are gone for every viewer.

  • Stories and Highlights. They use their own links and aren't feed posts, so a photo post field isn't the place for them.

  • Images sent to you in a direct message, since DMs are private between the people in the chat.

Keeping photos with Instagram Saved collections

If you mainly want to come back to a picture later, Instagram's Saved feature may be all you need. Tapping the bookmark icon under a post stores it privately on your account, and nobody, including the person who posted it, sees who saved it. It is also the better choice when you want to remember the post itself, since it keeps the caption, the comments and the creator's profile one tap away, which a loose image file never does.

  • After tapping the bookmark, choose Save to collection to file the post under a named collection such as Recipes, Outfit ideas or Client references.

  • Find everything you saved from the menu on your own profile, under Saved.

  • Saved posts stay linked to the original. If the owner deletes or archives the post, it drops out of your collection as well, which is the main reason people keep their own copy of images they rely on.

  • Collections suit mood boards and research: a folder per project keeps references together without filling your camera roll.

Reusing someone's photo with permission

Being able to save a picture doesn't make it yours to publish. The person who took it owns it, whether it is a product shot, a travel photo or a portrait. Keeping a copy for private reference or a mood board is a different matter from posting it to your feed. Screenshots work the same way: taking one doesn't change who owns the picture.

In the app, open the share or three-dot menu on the post and choose Copy link. On a computer, click the post so it opens on its own page, then copy the address from your browser bar. A working post link contains /p/ followed by a short code, while a profile link ends with the account's username.

One. A carousel is a single post, so every slide shares the same address. Copy the link once from any slide and paste it into the Instagram Photo URL field. If only one image matters to you, count which slide it is while you are still on Instagram, so you can pick it out later.

Yes, and Instagram has a built-in way to do it. In your account settings you can request a download of your information, and Instagram prepares a file with your photos, videos and other account data. It takes some time to arrive, so pasting a post link is quicker when you just need one picture.

Saving a post with the bookmark is private: owners see how many saves a post got in their insights, but not who saved it. Pasting a public post link into an outside tool doesn't send the owner a notification either. If you plan to reuse the photo anywhere public, tell them anyway and ask first.

Make sure it is a post or profile link rather than a Story, Highlight or DM link. Posts that were deleted, archived or moved behind a private account can't be reached from outside Instagram. If the link came from a shared message, open the post in Instagram and copy the link again from the post itself.
