Once you switch, links to your old profile and old @mentions no longer lead to you. Instagram may hold the old handle for a short time so you can change back, but after that anyone can claim it. If the old name matters to your brand, think twice before releasing it, or park it on a second account you control.

Keep it close to the business name, short enough to fit on packaging and a receipt, and easy to spell after hearing it once.
